We kick things off this week by discussing two films we watched this week, both of which feature David Bowie (or at least his music, it’s not like Labyrinth) Mariam watched Christiane F, the 1981 German film about a group of heroin addicted teens in Berlin. This leads us to talk about drug-movies more generally and specifically about how terrible Requiem for a Dream is. Meanwhile Ari saw The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Steven Chobsky’s adaptation of his own book.
Mariam’s pick this week is Ju-On the 2000 Japanese horror film which spawned a series of sequels and remakes, about a haunted house which kills all who dare enter. It’s a low-budget film, which looks quite cheap, but does that subtract or add to its scares?
Ari’s pick this week is Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Tomas Alfredson’s 2011 adaptation of the John Le Carré novel. Gary Oldman stars as George Smiley, a recently fired intelligence officer who is asked to investigate a possible mole inside British intelligence.
